Warming the soul

January 2, 2009

The frigid temperatures outside seemed to masked these days by the glow of my new guitar. What a surprise it was for me to receive such a gift! What’s more shocking to me was that it was hidden in our closet days before it was given to me! I can’t even imagine what it would’ve been like for me to have stumbled upon a guitar in our closet accidentally.

It’s not that I’ve always wanted to be in a rock band, but ever since I first moved to the north woods I couldn’t get the thought of playing guitar out of my head. I’m a piano player by trait and I dabbled a little at saxophone when I was younger, but there’s nothing quite like a guitar.

Learning to play the guitar has been a fun challenge!

Learning to play the guitar has been a fun challenge!

Besides my obvious love for acoustic sound, a guitar would be quite handy for a music-lover. It requires no wires, liars or mouthpieces, just old fashioned hand-eye coordination and hopefully some rhythm.  I think I’ve got the rhythm part down, but it has been quite difficult for me to learn the string placement of the notes. Piano seems so much more organized as far as the layout of the scale – everything goes from left to right. As I’m learning, the guitar is very different. It feels like the notes are “scattered,” so it’s been frusturating for me at times to learn to play without looking at my hands.

I look forward to the day when I can sit around the fire or by our wood stove in the living room and play a song without pause… or playing by ear upon request! It will happen… eventually… it just takes practice!
