This blog was created on Dec. 1, 2008, by two newly weds who moved to northern Minnesota to start a new life together. They were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by the Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society to live in an earth home as the caretakers of a nature preserve known as the Neilson Spearhead Center. This special place sits on 460 acres of undeveloped wilderness surrounding Spearhead Lake, located about 11 miles southwest of Bemidji, Minnesota.
Few are given a chance to live so close to nature as non-land owners. We thank the Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society for giving us the opportunity to be apart of this little piece of heaven. This blog serves as a journal that records what we observe at the Neilson Spearhead Center.

Love the dwellers photo!
I love your site. Keep it up !
Cool site, love the info.
This is so neat you guys. Very nice website.
Autumn’s here! Love’n it and live’n it. There’s no place like the Northland.
Who are you Dwellers? I spent many a day in the nature center at Spearhead being taught things by a woman named Janet Rith-Nijarian. She is a very kind lady. I actually remember doing rainfall samples on your porch, running around on your roof (like we weren’t supposed to), and playing by the lake. Lots of good times and fond memories.
Ooh! And all the bats that shacked up under the eaves of the nature center!
My father, Dr. Hatch, doesn’t live too far away on North Plantagenet.
We are glad you shared some memories with us. They all sound very familiar with what the kids do in the summer through the Young Naturalist Program. We are Anne and Ben Williams. We now have a new roof for kids to run on when they’re not supposed to!
