Feeder Findings
January 14, 2009
Check out my weekly updates of what’s been stopping by the feeder by visiting the “Feeder Findings” page on my blog! This week I was able to capture of a few close-up photos. If you have any interesting bird feeder stories or if you’ve encountered a new bird, let me know!

A common redpoll peaks from behind the thistle feeder to see if anyone's looking
Thanks for sharing your wonderful stories with us! I was just recently told about your blog, and I really enjoy it. I once had an adolescent flicker successfully attach him/herself to a feeder like yours. He wasn’t interested in the seeds. I think he found the feeder a play toy. He’d stick his long strong beak into the feeder holes, shake his beak inside vigorously, and watch the seeds fall to the floor. I managed to get a close up photo. You can see him here at this link to my blog at Chipper’s Alley: http://www.shannonryanart.com/blog/2008/07/feathered-vistors1.html. Keep the stories coming!
Anne, I realize it’s really cold where you are and your car probably is having a hard time starting to get you out of that earth home, but you need to try and make an effort to be around people more. I’m getting worried about you and your excitement over birds at a bird feeder. Have you ever seen “The Shining?” I’m seeing scenes from that show popping up in my mind!
Ha! Take care and stay warm!
I’ve never heard of a redpoll. Are they common further south than where you are located?
For more information on redpolls, check out this website: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Common_Redpoll.html.
We are finding they prefer to eat thistle. In fact, that’s about all we see them eat!
